Denzel Washington's adaptation of the literary giant August Wilson's great stage play Fences. We follow Troy and Rose Maxson our central characters as they go through the challenges of raising a family and trying to keep their dignity in a divided and unequal America. Emotionally rich, albeit troubling narratives that we confronted with over the course of the 2hrs +. Central to the film Denzel and Viola's screen chemistry which in the end what really carry the film. They deliver notable, career defining performances. Lyricism of the screen dialect also noteworthy; there a musical flow of words, references and idioms (Wilson;s signature points) which I at times struggle to keep up with. Film feel 'confined' and never really fill the screen or take flight into something that could be described as cinematic.
