The group Reel Black is composed of more than thirty non-fiction UK Based filmmakers that includes multi-award-winning producers, directors, editors and other filmmaking professionals. It is the only grouping of its kind and was created with the specific aim of affording a safe space for connection, communication and support for Black filmmakers navigating the documentary/non-fiction industries.
The Reel Black filmmaker’s retreat has been funded and supported by BFI / Doc Society, and will focus on skill-sharing, community building and mental recuperation after a collectively difficult past couple of years, and will be holistic in nature. It will include workshops, guest speaker events, wellness sessions, nature sessions and community/group building exercises.
The wellbeing retreat will take place in person from Friday 13 May – Sunday 15 May 2022 and online on Saturday 4 June.
Retreat attendees will be hosted at Butley Barns, a scenic location in Suffolk https://suffolkcoastalretreats.com/butley-barns.
It is expected that there will be 17 persons in attendance including the organizers and workshop facilitators.

The wellbeing aspects of the weekend will be led by Priscilla Vivian, a Psychotherapist and Mindfulness Facilitator and a nature walk will be led by Rhiane Fatinikun, Founder of Black Girls Hike UK.
The weekend will be carried out with full COVID19 protocols in mind.
