The School for Artistic Photography, Vienna founded in 1990 by Friedl Kubelka is the first school in Austria to be devoted exclusively to artistic photography. In contrast to commercial training opportunities, special attention is paid to recognizing and using the specific properties of the photographic medium.
The one-year course primarily aims to enable students to acquire an independent attitude and, only in connection with this, knowledge. It is about independence in perception, thinking and learning and the courage to confess the results thus obtained, which may deviate from the norm of our time, in one’s own way.
The artist-teachers at the school do not set any tasks. The greatest challenge for each individual is to discover the unconditional interest in the motif for oneself.
The teaching goal also includes the ability to acquire the knowledge needed for artistic work after attending school, as well as to find teachers, craftsmen, and mentors from among contemporary artists and theorists.

Friedl Kubelka (née Bondy, née vom Gröller) (born 1946) is an Austrian photographer, filmmaker and visual artist born in London, England in 1946. Her photographic practice has been attributed to a 20th-century movement known as Feminist Actionism or Viennese Actionism. Kubelka’s photographic works sometimes focus on accentuating temporality, seriality and the body.
In 1990, Kubelka founded the Friedl Kubelka School for Artistic Photography in Vienna. The School was the first devoted exclusively to artistic photography in Austria.
In 2006, she founded the School Friedl Kubelka for Independent Film, dedicated to the art of analog filmmaking. The school is now directed by the Austrian filmmaker and artist, Philipp Fleischmann.
